Web research report: I was looking online at websites that offset your carbon footprint and found a good one called climate care (http://www.climatecare.org/), where you can pay them to invest in different renewable energy uses based on a carbon footprint that they calculate based on use in your home, car, and flights. I liked that they put the footprint calculator and the ability to buy it on the same page, so that they could make it easy for consumers to do it all on one website. I also liked that they had a business section that was separate from the home carbon footprint calculator section, with questions tailored specifically to businesses. There are problems with the calculation of the carbon footprint, as the website can't identify every carbon-producing activity that you engage in. Additionally, their calculator assumes all your energy is produced with coal, rather than allowing you to calculate in any solar or wind power use you may be using. However, the questionnaire seemed fairly extensive to me, and very well researched. They had a feature where you could not include parts of your carbon footprint in the final price you pay, in case you didn't feel like you could afford to offset all your carbon. However, I was frustrated that, though they had a detailed description of what kind of projects your money would go to, including wind energy, rainforest regeneration (not just planting trees!), you couldn't choose which project you wanted to support. The projects, in addition to being described in detail, were also interesting, and all were community-based, many in developing nations. |
